Clay surface changes after chemical and physical treatments

Abstract

Clay minerals are considered as promising future materials, due to their characteristics and wide area of application. Chemical composition, cationic exchange capacity, specific surface area and pores volume of clay are some of characteristics applied in different fields of industry. Clay minerals are used in chemical industry as detergents, as catalysator, catalyst carrier and even in beverage technologies. Their role in the future has been reflected in environmental cleaning, water pollution protection and science of nano-composition.  Bentonites has been largely used in their natural form or after modifications (acid, alkali, or organic substances).  Natural Bentonites modifications with acids are in focus of our study and previous studies.  Chemical and physical treatment of clay are used in this study to change adsorption/desorption capabilities. Also, they are used to change the chemical-physical structure of clay, clay surface area after treatment with sulfuric acid and thermal treatment in different temperatures.
